Friends, on December 7th I will return to St. Maarten for the first time since the island was hit by catastrophic cat 5 hurricane Irma. The island faced complete devastation. SXM Paws, a cause near and dear to my heart, shelter was destroyed. At that time, SXM Paws used all of their resources to ensure as many of the islands homeless animals were fostered until their ultimate rescue effort to bring hundreds of dogs and cats to safety. In October 2017 they chartered a private aircraft (yes, they are true angels) and brought the animals to the US where they were adopted and/or found placement in local shelters awaiting a home. This was a huge and costly undertaking. My goal from now until I leave is to raise funds to help replenish their funds so that more animals can be taken into care, have medical attention and find homes, either locally or abroad. To make this a challenge, Oakley, Sunset and I pledge to run/walk 5 kilometres everyday until I depart. For every kilometre I complete in their company, I will donate $1. They rely totally on donations and their mission has always been to take in any animal in need on the island. This is no easy task.
