TL;DR - I am running a marathon on Sunday to raise money for the NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund. Please donate.
Following the recent events in Minneapolis, I - along with so many around the world - have been reading, watching, reflecting and trying to work out in which ways I can help to instigate the change that needs to happen.
One of the things I can do is to do stupid things to raise money for organisations full of inspiring people who can do inspiring things. The NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund fight for racial justice every day through pushing for structural changes to expand democracy and eliminate disparities. Education and empowerment are two of the virtues I hold dearest, so this is this is how I can help with that.
I had signed up to run the (virtual) Hackney Half Marathon this weekend as some lockdown motivation but I couldn't ask for sponsorship for something I was going to do for fun. So this Sunday, June 7th, I am going to run a full marathon around Mwanza and would love you to throw a bit of money this way. I will donate to cover all costs and fees of transferring the money to the NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund, so every penny, cent or shilling you donate will go to them.
Have I trained for a marathon? No. Will it already be in the mid 20 degrees when I set off at 6am? Yes. Have I ever ran further than a half-marathon? No. Are we 1100 metres above sea-level? Yes. Will it suck? Yes. Will it suck as much as not knowing if your husband, wife, son, brother, daughter, sister, neighbour or friend of colour will return home alive due to institutional racism within law enforcement? No.
