In November of 2016 my stepdad, Ed D'Urso, began a seven month journey at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Coming in with heart failure, our family had a tough decision to make - pallative care for his remaining weeks of life, or surgery to place a new device, LVAD, in his heart to essentially pump for him. With the hope of another five years of life, he opted for the LVAD surgery. Although surgery itself went well, with an expert team at B&W, challenges and complications hit him hard in recovery. After about seven months of fighting to get his strength and health back at Brigham and Women's and Spaulding Rehab, his journey ended on June 6, 2017.
On June 6, 2020 I will be running a half marathon, the Old Port Half Marathon, on the third anniversary of his passing. On his behalf, I will be collecting funds for the Shaprio Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The team at Brigham and Women's Shapiro Center CICU (Cardiac Intensive Care Unit) were very knowledgable and supportive during his time there. My family would like to thank them for all their efforts, as well as welcoming us there as our second home (quite literally for my mother, who lived at his bedside for his first two months at Brigham and Women's, and basically every weekend after that). With these funds, we hope Brigham and Women's can continue to help families in similar situations.
Please consider donating to Brigham and Women's CICU on behalf of the D'Urso and Slavin families. If you'd prefer to write a check, please make it payable to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with The D'Urso & Slavin Families in the memo line. You can mail the check to me and I will send them together.
