"I want to read more and learn harder words."
-- my 3rd grade student on our first day of WITS when asked what she wanted to accomplish through the program this school year.
I have had the opportunity to volunteer with Working in the Schools (WITS) for the last year and half, reading and engaging with students as they transition from learning-to-read to reading-to-learn. As part of the Mid-Day Mentoring program, I have been able to pass on my love of books and reading while reinforcing the importance of chidren's literacy.
To help spread the word about this important organization, I am pledging to run the Chicago Spring Half Marathon on May 20 - my first half marathon - and am asking for your support!
Your support and donations will enable WITS to carry out its mission of promoting literacy in Chicago Public School elementary students through a volunteer-powered, outcomes-based portfolio of programs. Your support ensures the WITS programming is consistent and reliable at NO cost to the partner schools. WITS endeavors to bridge the achievement and opportunity gap for underserved students through building connections with positive adult role models and works to provide the critical support that our students need to set them on a path toward academic success.
Help support me in running this Half Marathon in order to share the power of reading, promote literacy and spread the love of learning through WITS!
