Over five years ago I had a long discussion with my father about volunteerism and giving back to the community. He was very involved in a number of organizations within his community and found great meaning and pride in the work he was doing to help others. Seeing how helping his community enriched his life inspired me to find ways to become more involved in my community.
Growing up, animals were a big part of my life. My family had rescued and fostered a number of dogs and cats from the local animal shelter over the years, and even raised chickens and ducks for a time. These animals had always been a happy addition to my family and provided me with a number of great memories over the years.
I had recently adopted two cats from Baypath and was impressed by the work they were doing. I was able to see all of the animals that they cared for, and how they were able to pair these animals up with a new, loving family. As I thought about the organizations that I wanted to become involved with, I decided that helping connect families with an animal in need of a home was a cause that resonated with me.
Over the past several years, I’ve tried to help the shelter in a number of ways. I’ve walked dogs, fostered 13 cats over the years (and even adopted one of the kittens we recently fostered), transported animals to veterinary appointments, updated adoption websites with the latest additions to the shelter, created videos to showcase animals and promote Baypath on social media, and much more.
And now I’m taking on my biggest challenge for Baypath. I will be representing Baypath Humane Society at this year’s Boston Marathon!
While I have run well over 100 races (5ks, 10ks, half marathons) over the past 5 years, this will be my very first marathon. While it is a daunting task, it is also one that I am very excited to do. I’m excited not just for the race, but also because I have a chance to raise money to help Baypath care for even more animals.
Which brings me to my ask – please help me reach my goal of raising $10,000 for Baypath Humane Society. This money will help pay for medical expenses, food, shelter, and other expenses needed to care for these animals in need. And most importantly, your donation will help an animal find a new family that will provide them with the care and love that they deserve.
