Hello, my name is Shane Nowak and this October I will be running the Chicago Marathon in memory and celebration of my late fiance Michelle Raduha. Michelle passed away on July 27th, 2013 at the age of 29 after suffering a pulmonary embolus following emergent ankle surgery. The week before her passing Michelle had fallen, fracturing her ankle and was immobilized in a wheelchair while she recovered and completed her physical therapy. It is presumed at this time she developed a blood clot in her lower leg which migrated to her lung and ultimately led to her death.
Michelle was a lover of animals, a caring friend, devoted daughter and most of all the love of my life. Being also a talented writer Michelle would have been honored for me to share her story with all of you today and raise awareness for not only her tragic death but that of countless others. Blood clots can affect young and old, sick and healthy, men and women alike, and in some cases be disabling if not fatal.
To commemorate Michelle's life I will be raising money for the National Blood Clot Alliance and will be donating all charitable contributions to their organization which aims to further educate the public regarding blood clots. My goal is to raise 1,000 by October 13th prior to running Chicago marathon. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated for not only Michelle, but all those who have been affected by this tragic disease.
