Why in the holy mackerel of ever-lovin’ cheese balls would I EVER agree to run 500 miles?! Very simply: because he ran for me. I crashed into a residential treatment program in August of 2015, after drinking every single day for 12 years. I had no hope for a new life; only a hope to end life. I did not believe I could be helped. Robin patiently sat across a table in assessment from me while I broke down, and he told me something that changed everything for me: he told me he was an alcoholic too.
In treatment, I met a counselor named Sarafina, and she made me think I may have value. She and Robin encouraged me to continue my sobriety when I left by transitioning into sober living. I was vehemently opposed to this suggestion. Not only because I had NO IDEA what they were talking about, but also because I didn’t have a dollar to my name. After a lot of mistakes, head bumping, two more months of agony—I found myself in a position where I felt I had no choice. Well, I did—my ‘Plan A’ was to drink myself to death. Robin and Sara swooped in, one more time, to ruin my plan. Robin gave me a scholarship to the Puente House, good for two weeks. Three and a half years later, I am still there. And I have never been more grateful.
Gratitude is an action word, so let’s run.
