On Saturday, May 19th, I will be running the Big Lake Half Marathon around beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. I am dedicating my run to raise awareness and funds for a remarkable non-profit organization known as Aaron's Presents. Through fully funded and self-led projects, Aaron's Presents seeks to enable young kids to tap into their innate idealism, kindness and compassion to achieve tangible results that benefit their communities and themselves.
The Big Lake Half is a special race for me. As a kid, I grew up going to 'the lake' every summer with my mom and dad. Lake Winnipesaukee was my dad's paradise, and it was on the back of his boat where I did some of my best day dreaming as a kid. So, after a decade of letting it sit on my bucket list, I finally decided 2018 was the year! I was ready to train and relive the great memories. What I wasn't ready for was to learn that my dad was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer, just about a week after I registered for the race. With the compassion and support of so many amazing people, he is receiving the absolute best care possible and we are inspired each day by his progress and the selflessness of these individuals who truly go above and beyond to help individuals and families heal.
Why Aaron's Presents:
Through this experience with my dad, I was introduced to Aaron's Presents through a very special doctor who is a founding member of the organization. I was so struck by the unique mission, to foster ways for young kids to grow as engaged citizens of their communities, that I knew I needed to channel my gratitude for the generosity and kindness that my family has been given, by using my own abilities and passion for running, to support the cause. Training for and running in the Big Lake Half Marathon, a special race in a special place, felt like the perfect opportunity to make an impact by paying it forward to young kids and their communities, recognizing that the adults who have been so giving and kind were once young kids with big hearts and ideas too.
What Will Your Gift Provide:
By donating to Aaron's Presents, your dollar will go to support funding of self-led projects designed by kids to make an impact in their communities. Projects have included designing a healing garden, creating and delivering care packages to hospital patients, soldiers and families in transitional housing, creating a special library space for an after-school enrichment program, teaching cooking, dance and gymnastics classes to younger students, donation drives for animal shelters and food pantries, and the list goes on and on.
The kids who have applied for funding by Aaron's Parents are intensely thoughtful, creative and kind. I am so excited to be raising awareness and funds to help support their causes, and I am so grateful to you for your consideration of support as well!
About Aaron's Presents:
If you would like to learn more about Aaron's Presents and some of the projects that a gift to the organization would support, please take a look at some of the amazing things kids have been doing with support from Aaron's Presents:
Aaron’s Presents is a 501(c)(3) youth development organization that offers 1) hands-on, individualized mentoring, 2) materials or services needed and 3) logistical help to any children in 8th grade or below who want to carry out an idea that benefits at least one other person, animal or the environment. We give young kids a chance to practice compassion, generosity and practical life skills with real-life experiences in the larger community that they themselves have envisioned and planned. They are empowering themselves to take positive action that impacts others by using their own unique gifts and personalities, and find joy and purpose in the process.
