It’s been more than 10 years since Russell Meyerowitz, Laurence's brother, spearheaded the launch of the Parkinson’s Wellness Fund to honor their father: a man who has never let Parkinson’s define him.
When I asked Russell a few years ago why the Parkinson’s Wellness Fund is so important considering the other research foundations that exist, he explained it to me like this:
Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV more than 2 decades ago, yet look at him. He has had the resources to get the best treatment money can buy, and in 25 years has not developed AIDS and is as healthy as can be.
While there is no cure for Parkinson’s, there are certainly medical advances and other treatments that can help hundreds of thousands of individuals live better lives. Yet, much of these treatments, and other daily necessities (wheelchairs, ramps, rides to the doctor, etc.) are not accessible to a large segment of the population.
There are Parkinson’s patients whose conditions and quality of life have deteriorated unnecessarily quick. If they, like Magic Johnson, had the means they could have gotten diagnosed earlier, received more frequent and better medical treatment, and other necessities.
There exist other wonderful foundations focused on research, which have a critical role in finding cures/treatments. However, the Parkinson's Wellness Fund was created because there was a void: An organization was needed to help current patients who can't afford what they need to live to their fullest potential.
That is why the Parkinson’s Wellness Foundation matters AND that is why Laurence and I run every year. This year we will run the Silver Strand Half Marathon on November 10th.
Please join us in our efforts by donating any amount that makes you comfortable. It is for a cause near to us and near to so many. Together we can make a difference. To learn more about the Parkinson's Wellness Fund go to parkinsonswellnessfund.org.
Our sincerest love and thanks,
Rosy and Laurence Meyerowitz
