Hello! My name is Kara Fahey and I am a Freshman Nursing Major at Saint Anselm College. This spring my team and I will be running The Run To Remember in Boston, Massachusetts. We will be running to raise money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). JDRF funds the research towards finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when someone's pancreas stops producing insulin. Although insulin is able to keep those with Type 1 Diabetes alive, it is not a cure.
My little sister was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was four years old. I have seen first hand the impact of T1D and the constant care needed.
- 40,000 people are diagnosed each year in the U.S.
- Between 2001 and 2009, there was a 21% increase in the prevalence of T1D in people under the age of 20.
- In the U.S., there are $14 billion in T1d-associated healthcare expenditures and lost income annually.
- Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2015.
Support my friends and I, but more so JDRF and their continuing research to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Thank you so much!
