The Harlem River Classic is NYC's only regatta and a day of competitive racing and fundraising for Row New York programs. All of the proceeds of this event will directly support Row New York's programs which seek to bring the benefits of rowing and academic support to underserved communities throughout NYC.
As a former collegiate and Olympic team rower, I know the benefits of rowing at a high level. I gained a whole new appreciation for what rowing can be about when I helped coached a local novice team. They taught me a new meaning to team work and hard work and perserverance. With limited community and family support, they created their own ways to help each other- whether it was waking each other up for 5 AM practice or reminding one another to bring their homework to a regatta. With very diverse backgrounds and with very different prior athletic experiences, all the student athletes found that rowing was a way for them to "practice success". They developed confidence in their abilities, accepted responsibility for their actions, and took pride in their accomplishments and those of their teammates.
The gifts of rowing go far beyond an erg score or a quick catch and Row New York is an integral part of sharing all these gifts with as broad a community as possible. Please join us!
