When Rosie Mashale moved to Khayelitsha -- the largest township in Cape Town, South Africa -- she was alarmed to see children scavenging in the dump near her home. So, she started a daycare center for them. Then in 2000, she took in a child abandoned on her doorstep. Her organization, Baphumelele, has since provided care for more than 5,000 orphaned, abandoned, and sick children in her impoverished community.
