As some of you know, Jon and I are expecting our second child in just a few weeks. Today marks an important milestone for us - I am 33 weeks and 3 days pregnant.
At this exact point almost 3.5 years ago, our little Luke was born by emergency c-section. It was one of the most exciting days for us, but also one of the scariest. We were fortunate in that we knew I was at high risk of delivering early, and we had some of the best physician teams surrounding us throughout what was surely a tumultuous few months.
We were also fortunate that Luke was delivered in a hospital with care teams and a NICU that had the talent and expertise to make sure we had every chance of bringing Luke home with us. 13 long days after delivery, we were lucky enough to do just that.
We are forever grateful for the support and great care our child received. But we are also acutely aware that we are among the lucky ones. Being a parent with a newborn in the NICU is a grueling experience, filled with extreme stress for the entire family. This stress is only further compounded by complicated life circumstances that affect many of the parents we saw sitting next to us every day.
Montefiore is located in the Bronx, New York City. It is among the poorest most underserved communities in the country. As we reflect upon this moment, we feel compelled to do something to celebrate our son Luke, our little guy on the way, and our good fortune.
So we are asking our friends and family to join us in giving something back. To the extent you have something to give this holiday season, consider contributing to Montefiore's NICU in the form of the Fragile Newborn Development Care fund. The funds raised are intended to support families with everything from educational materials to comfort items, rocking chairs, food, and celebrations like the one they will have this week for babies and their families that must spend the holidays at the hospital.
Thank you to all of you who took the time to read this. And thank you, Montefiore Weiler NICU team, for everything you do every single day to help families in the Bronx and beyond.
All our love,
Kate, Jon and Lucas Rose
