Roots School is an independent nonprofit school located in Haiku, Maui, serving children from preschool - 5th grade. At Roots we believe that lifelong learners are nurtured through active inquiry, hands-on exploration, and meaningful community involvement. In addition to traditional academic content, we have a strong focus on Social/Emotional Learning in order to help children develop personal integrity, confidence, and compassion for others.
One of our parents recently told us:
“Roots School has been the best choice we have ever made for our child. We are having a completely different experience at Roots compared with our local public school where our son was miserable and crying daily. When we sent him to Roots he transformed into a smiling boy who loves going to school, appreciates his teachers and earns top grades. This school is truly spectacular.” – River Siver
The current pandemic has affected everyone, including many of our working-class families who are no longer able to afford tuition costs. While we were able to significantly increase our tuition aid awards this year, we still lost approximately 25% of our families due to pandemic-related issues. While we are confident that in the coming years we will see a return to our normal enrollment numbers, this year is very challenging for us.
This year also presented many unexpected expenses, including new individual desks to allow for physical distancing of students (in the past students sat at shared tables), increased professional daily and weekly cleaning and disinfecting of the building, additional cleaning supplies including touchless soap and hand sanitizer dispensers, PPE masks for teachers and students, tents to increase outdoor learning spaces, and a phone app for parents to record their child’s temperature every morning before coming to school.
We are working diligently to ensure that we can continue to provide the very best arts-integrated, project-based learning for all our students. But we need your help! COVID-19 has consumed so many of our resources, as well as the resources of our families and students who depend on us.
Please help us keep our doors open to all of Maui's keiki (children) who need us! Your donation of ANY amount is greatly appreciated. Mahalo!
