My name is Roland Guillen and I’m the Director of Captive Growth Strategy for Bender Insurance Solutions, one of Northern California’s largest independent insurance brokerages. I’m very excited to announce my participation in this year’s Capital Cup Golf Tournament to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
For over 8 years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve LLS through numerous fundraising campaigns and have personally witnessed the dedication of volunteers and LLS staff working collectively to find a cure for blood related cancers and advocating for patient services. Aside from my involvement in the Capital Cup, there are many more reasons to support LLS!
Life Saving Research - more than 40% of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA between 2000 and 2016 were first approved for blood cancer patients. In 2019, 12 of the 14 FDA approvals for Blood Cancers were funded by LLS. Many of these LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now approved to treat patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancer.
LLS Children’s Initiative - though the survival rate for children diagnosed with blood cancer has risen dramatically from 5% in the 1950’s to nearly 90% today, too many children who survive their blood cancer do not survive their treatments, and 80% will suffer serious lifelong health issues. In the last 40 years, only 4 oncology drugs have been approved for use in children. We must address both issues, and that is why I strongly support the LLS Children’s Initiative, a 5-year, $50 million global research initiative to find effective, less toxic treatments for pediatric patients. This is the first pediatric initiative of its kind.
In a few short months, I will be competing in the 6th Annual Capital Cup on September 25-27, a golf tournament among fellow Sacramento business leaders to raise funds for local charities and non-profits. I have chosen to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to further their mission of curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS research is helping to save lives and I’m proud to support their outstanding efforts.
On behalf of myself and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, thank you very much for your support and contributing to this great cause.
