This is Rocco and he needs our help.
Rocco's story will touch your heart and fill you with a lot of emotion. The primary reason for this campaign is to raise funds to help with Rocco's required knees surgery. Unlike most dogs, Rocco has tremendous trouble doing the most basic activities such as walking, running, going up and down the stairs, etc. During outdoor time, the foster must use a sling in order to give Rocco the proper support to guide him on a short walk. Rocco cannot go up to the 2nd level of the house and needs to be carried up the and down the stairs. It is truly unfortunate to see Rocco in this state because overall he is a very happy dog who just wants to live a quality life which every dog deserves. He loves to ride in a car and enjoys watching outside the window. Despite all his health imperfections, Rocco is a very affectionate boy that will give you lots of kisses.
We rescued him from San Jose Animal Shelter in April 2020 not knowing much, only that Rocco was not available for adoption and was marked for a rescue only. Rocco was marked as a "medical" dog meaning that he would need attention from the vet specialists. As any last minute rescues, we acted fast to save Rocco - his time at the shelter was up. Our caring foster met Rocco at the shelter and his new journey to recovery started.
Immediately, after rescuing Rocco we knew there was something wrong with his back legs, he did not really walk normal, he would sit down and stay on his bed all the time. He was taken to the Kirkwood Animal Hospital and later referred to Sage Veterinary Center in Redwood City for a consultation with a surgeon.
The news was not very good, Rocco was suffering both ACL tears and possible tears in muniscus with mild hip dysplasia and mild arthritis. In order to get him on his feet, Rocco needs a surgery on both of his knees to repair his ACL and clean out the damaged muniscus. Such surgeries are not cheap, out initial quote was $12000 and we knew that we cannot afford this. After researching and speaking with several clinics we took Rocco to see another surgeon at Standiford Veterinary Center in Modesto. Doctor Magnussen was very knowledgeable and instilled trust in us from the first visit. We knew that Rocco will be in great hands. Fortunately for us and Rocco, we will be able to cut the surgery costs in half: the estimated price is $6000 for both knees with this clinic. It is still quite large amount for our tiny rescue, given we recently pulled multiple medical dogs that require funds for their visits to the vet clinics. We are hopeful we can fundraise the right amount to send Rocco to his surgery in the near weeks. Rocco will require to stay at the hospital for at least 2-3 nights after this complicated surgery to be monitored and ensure his body is healing well. Then he will on a long road to recovery with required rehab and physical therapy that we will most likely need to arrange after the procedures are done.
Please, we cannot wait to postpone his surgery, Rocco has been declining and is on constant pain meds to give him some comfort. This surgery will improve Rocco's quality of life by 70-80% and he will walk and be able to hike! again which is amazing news to us since the prognosis was not so good for Rocco. We cannot give up on him, he is a fighter and we are here to support him along the way!
