Each summer, we show our strength as a community by setting up Lemonaid stands to benefit Robin Hood, NYC’s largest poverty-fighting non-profit. COVID 19 won’t allow us to gather this summer, but we can still help people devastated by this virus.
The most vulnerable New Yorkers — people living in poverty — are being hit the hardest by this pandemic. To put this in perspective:
· 1.7 million New Yorkers were living in poverty before COVID-19. Since February, 1.2 million have lost jobs.
· The demand for emergency food has increased by over 200% in some neighborhoods with food pantries seeing 3x as many new visitors. Yet with lines around the block and empty shelves, 40% of food pantries have CLOSED.
This new reality is devastating. But Robin Hood was built for times like these. Robin Hood has already deployed 200 emergency cash grants to 150 community organizations in the past 4 weeks. But this is just the beginning. We need to support the individuals we care about through relief into long-term recovery.
I have never been prouder to be Robin Hood, and I ask you join me in this fight in whatever way you choose.
