100% of the funds raised through this silent auction item will benefit the #FosterChallenge Community Partners including First Star Academies. First Star, a national non-profit, improves the lives of foster youth by partnering with child welfare agencies, universities, and school districts to ensure foster youth have the academic, life skills, and adult supports needed to transition to higher education and adulthood successfully. We pursue our mission through innovative, university-based college-preparatory programs, providing technical assistance to stakeholders, and advocating for policy change.
First Star was founded in 1999 by media executive Peter Samuelson and lawyer Sherry Quirk as a national 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to improving life for child victims of abuse and neglect. Since 2011 First Star has pioneered support programs to launch foster children into productive lives and careers through higher education.
The First Star Network needs funds for their youth who are experiencing extraordinary challenges in light of the current COVD-19 health and economic crisis. Additional resources will specifically assist one of their scholars who lost her foster dad due to COVID-19 last month. He was the primary earner in the household, and without his presence and support now, the family is trying to determine how to pick up the pieces. Another First Star scholar is recovering from being in the hospital due to a home fire. He, his five siblings, and parents all became homeless when a fire ravished their small apartment. A full list of benefiting organizations can be found under the community partners section on this silent auction home page.
