In just 8 short weeks, the 2019 Snowboarders and Skiers for Christ National Conference will be going down! Hard to believe some of us are thinking about snow when the leaves are barely changing colors. I am looking forward to what the SFC ministry could look like as I settle in to the new community of the Greater Detroit, Michigan area.
Hold the phone, RJ. WHAT is Snowboarders and Skiers for Christ?
Snowboarders & Skiers for Christ USA (SFC USA) is a grassroots organization that exists to bridge the ski/snowboard culture to Jesus, partnering with the local Church. SFC’s vision is to be the light of Jesus in the ski/snowboard culture. SFC USA leaders believe God’s Word calls them to "be the light" of Jesus on the hill and to engage those within their culture through genuine, loving relationships. I have been part of the SFC community both as a friend to ride with and as a Chapter Leader while I was living in Minnesota.
This November 21st through the 24th will be the 2019 SFC USA National Conference. This event promises to be the most important weekend of the year for an SFCer getting equipped for a long season of shred ministry. It’s a time to make new friends, get pumped up on shred ministry and gather ideas of what SFC could look like back home in Detroit. I have a great opportunity to be a co-leader in an already established ski club that meets on Friday nights. The crowd that attends are high schoolers, so the conference serves as a crucial opportunity to gather insight and ideas on how to reach this demographic.
Okay RJ, I'm beginning to understand. So, what's your WHY?
For those of you who may not know, my family and I relocated to the East side of Michigan in June of 2018. The winter season of 2018/19 was a huge transition for us. My wife, Anna, was diving deep in to her first year as a Student Director of our church. I was also working to establish myself in a new and challenging career change. To add to that, we were in the process of being first time home owners. And to add a cherry on top, we have a toddler running around. There wasn't much time for me to sneak away for some rips down the ski slopes; let alone run a ski ministry like I did back in Minnesota.
Now that we're established and settled, I'm ready to get back to my calling of partnering Jesus and my love for skiing to reach a unique but large culture. My father in law is the Principal of a local Christian high school and they bring a group of students to a local ski hill every Friday night. The previous leader is stepping down, which then I heard a loud calling from God that said, "you should step up." I see a huge opportunity to reach a population of kids who may have certain doubts, insecurities, life questions, etc. Even though these kids already go to a Christian school, that doesn't necessarily mean they don't struggle with life's everyday challenges. These are crucial years in a young persons life, and I have the chance to reach them in a very organic way.
I'm asking you to PARTNER with me in this mission. Below is a cost breakdown:
-$80: conference meals (conference fee covers some meals, but not all)
-$99: conference fee (I have been awarded a scholarship through SFC that covers the rest)
-$100: gas for round trip from Manchester airport to Loon Mountain

Please be praying for me, the SFC leaders and for God to guide me in this ministry in the Greater Detroit area.
