Medical debt is one of the most crippling and uncontrollable debts a person can be saddled with. It often comes through little or no fault of the beholder and can destroy a person's ability to achieve fanancial stability. Serious accidents and illnesses often hinder an individual from returning to their normal life and collecting the income they need, which only deepens a person’s financial struggle. Currently, nearly 1/3 of all GoFund me campaigns are centered around relief of medial debt; it cripples large segments of American communities with insurmountable debt. Medical debt is also often bought and sold on secondary markets that engage in predatory tactics to collect the owed debt. This creates an almost never ending cycle that can make it nearly impossible for a person to pay their way out. Rising healthcare costs and endless bills are leaving families and individuals with nowhere to turn.
Medical debt isn’t the result of bad decisions. It’s a debt of necessity.
RIP Medial Debt was founded in 2014 with the mission of using donations to buy large bundles of medical debt and forgive that debt with no tax consequences to donors or recipients. They are a 501(C)(3) organization and have provided financial relief for over 1,993,036 individuals and families, totaling nearly $2,923,063,975 in eradicated medical debts. If you would like to find more information on this organization, we encourage you to watch this segment from John Oliver’s show linked below. While a little left-leaning, we do like the way this segmet highlights some of the "why’s" behind this organization (it should be noted this segment may not be suited for kids) https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=315&v=hxUAntt1z2c&feature=emb_logo
