Truly I tell you, ‘whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
My name is Antony Raj. I am a Roman Catholic religious brother, who has dedicated his life to the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
I was born in India, where I live and work as an administrator and educator. I work with some of the poorest children living the poorest areas of my country. The children attend schools that are supported for the most part by the Catholic Church.
PUTTING YOUR DONATION TO WORK
Our goal of $25,000 will allow me and my fellow religious brothers to purchase and then distribute enough rice, dal and cooking oil to seven (7) villages to keep those in need from starvation.
Because we have partnered with the Michael Carter Foundation and have provided no goods or services to you, your donation is tax deductible to the full extent of the law in the United States.
POVERTY IN INDIA
The good news is that abject poverty in India has been declining for some time. In 2011, 275 million people, 22% of India’s population of 1 25 billion (at that time) lived in poverty. By 2019 the rate had declined to 17%, but the population has increased to 1 37 billion. This means that 233 million people still live in poverty. Many are children.
THE CORONAVIRUS – COVID-19
Before the coronavirus struck, India was on track to reduce poverty even more. All that has changed. Even though the total number of cases is still small relative to the size of the population, it is growing rapidly.
The government is doing what it can but given the size of the problem many workmen like painters, carpenters, construction workers, and industrial employees are unable to meet the needs of daily living because they have lost their jobs. They and their families are in desperate need of rice and face malnutrition if not outright starvation.
