I am so excited to be running my first marathon—the 2020 Boston Marathon as a member of Team Rett. I am honored to run on behalf of an organization as amazing and special as the Rett Syndrome Association of Massachusetts, and help them fund research, clinical trials, and most importantly FIND A CURE. Running the Boston Marathon is something I have always wanted to do, and I am so humbled to run in support of RSAM and Caroline Joyce
For those that may be unfamiliar with Rett syndrome… it is a rare genetic neurological disorder that affects the way the development of the brain. It occurs almost exclusively in girls, and leaves children dependent on others for their basic needs such as eating, drinking, dressing, and bathing. It affects about 1 in 10,000 girls every year, and is classified as a “rare disease.” Up until the 1980s, Rett syndrome wasn’t even acknowledged in medical journals. I became aware of Rett syndrome when I entered high school and met my best friend Brooke; Brooke’s sister Caroline Joyce has Rett syndrome. Despite having difficulty and needing assistance with daily activities, Caroline’s spirit continues to inspire me and will motivate me through my training.
I hope that I can raise over $10,000 by April 20th, 2020…but I need your help!!!! On behalf of Team Rett and RSAM, ANY donation is appreciated—money, kind words, hugs— and I thank you already! Without your help, I won’t be able to take on this incredible journey and help find a cure for Rett!!
