WWI came to an end on November 11, 1918. The following year, The American Legion was formed in Paris, France, by a thousand members of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), and granted a charter by
Congress a few months later. Darling-Gunderson Post 341 of The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, located in Birnamwood, WI, was chartered by Congress on June 22 nd , 1921. Birnamwood has a history of producing veterans proud to serve our country – many of us have relatives whose names are on that original charter – and The American Legion provides a means for us to continue to serve our community, state, and nation.
Over the decades since our Post was chartered, the members of Post 341 have kept up a tradition of remembering those who have fallen by providing a firing squad and color guard for every veteran’s family who requests it for their loved one. It is a solemn duty for which we take pride in doing it well for the service member’s surviving family. The Post averages 10-12 veteran funerals annually. Along those lines, the Post provides a ceremonial salute at seven cemeteries on Memorial Day. In addition, the Post has provided military salutes at annual functions on Veterans Day and Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day.
We are asking for donations so the Legion Hall can be restored to its orginial glory. This will include landscaping, new doors, lighting, siding, soffit and fascia, landscaping, interior finishes, electrical, heating, etc.
This year marks the centennial of our Post, and it is a pivotal year for us relative to our Post building unfortunately, lack of regular upkeep has taken its toll and now we are poised to begin renovating.
Any dollar amount would be appreciated - The campaign goal that we are seeking is for material costs while labor is being donated by Legion Members and other community members. Whatever dollar amount is appreciated. If you would also like to donate your time, talents, or other materials that you think we could use please reach out to us at your email address - firstname.lastname@example.org
