Over the past several weeks, many of us have received financial assistance on behalf of the CARES Act.
As a resident, I qualified for the full cash stipend. Nevertheless, I think it is unquestionable that I am less impacted than most by the combination of COVID-19 and the appropriate precautions taken to lessen the disease's impact on both the general population and the health care system [that's us!]. Namely, my job is secure and more important and valued than ever. No one is going to furlough me, or lay me off. Furthermore, my current salary by which I qualified for CARES Act funds does not really reflect my potential earnings. For instance, many of us have already signed contracts for many multiples of the 75k maximum personal income threshold for assistance, and many more of us have chosen to pursue sub-specialty training that will allow us [eventually!] to do the same.
So while I am thankful to be eligible for this assistance, I'm even more appreciative of being in a fortunate situation where I do not need this money, nor do I feel that by receiving it I truly reflect the kind of person for which it was intended.
As such, I'd like to encourage those of us that can to consider donating some part of any CARES Act funds received to the Rochester Area Foundation's Together Fund. In short, Rochester Area Foundation is the major community foundation in Rochester, and will distribute 100% of donations to the Together Fund to local (Rochester and SE MN) non-profits in need due to COVID-19 during 2020.
More information can be found here: https://newscenter.mayo.edu/2020/03/30/mayo-clinic-supporting-local-nonprofits-during-challenging-time/ [if you are on the intranet]
You can also donate directly to the RAF Together fund here: https://app.mobilecause.com/form/a5HbQw?vid=7cory [I didn't set the $250 autofill and can't change it]
I would encourage anyone interested to donate through this portal as the administrative fee per donation (1.9% + $0.30 per donation) is slightly less than the 2.5% when donating to RAF directly. Any money collected through this gofundme will be donated in full to the RAF Together fund, and I will cover the one time 2.5% fee personally at that time. I have the fundraising goal set at $1209 as currently GoFundMe is offering to match fundraisers that raise over $1000 from at least 10 donations with a $1000 grant on a first-come first served basis by May 10, 2020. I don't think I have any way to assure this cost-matching happens, but all I can do is jump through the right hoops and hope for the best.
Since there aren't sports on anyways and I'm terrible at Fortnite, I'll forgo the 60" OLED for a few more years and get us started. That leaves 9 more $1 donations to take us the rest of the way. Anything that anyone feels like giving would be deeply, deeply appreciated.
