Unaddressed trauma is a public health crisis. A study in 2016 reported 34 million children, nearly half of all U.S. children ages 0-17, had experienced childhood trauma. In Colorado, 62% of adults report at least one traumatic childhood event. Schools serving communities with high rates of poverty face the profound challenge of meeting the needs of students who are often exposed to numerous traumatic events, which places their cognitive, social, and emotional development at risk. Further, schools must find ways to meet these children’s needs without inadvertently further traumatizing them in the process.
The mission of Resilient Futures is to foster equitable, safe, and resilient communities for all youth. At Resilient Futures, we define resilience as the capacity to grow and thrive, with strength and tenacity, in the face of trauma and oppression for both individuals and communities. We believe that this resilience can be developed and fostered amongst all. Resilient Futures co-founders Drs. Megan Brennan, Ellie Cahill and Laura McArthur have extensive experience working within schools in various capacities, including specifically supporting the growth of the school-wide approaches to trauma and equity for all students.
Laura has been a member of Shari Wagner's Iron Clad Fitness for 3 years and has found the community and strength built at the gym a key factor in her own resilience while supporting so many individuals and communities facing chronic stress and trauma.
This fundraiser grew out of Shari and Laura's many conversations about the stressors of today's world, the importance of self-care, and Shari's commitment to fostering safety and community in her gym.
Please join us on October 13th as we do "Reps 4 Resilience" and create community, fundraise for Resilient Futures, and have a great time together! Learn more about the event at www.reps4resilience.com
