For nearly a decade I have volunteered locally for the American Red Cross as part of its small-but-effective Berkshire county Disaster Action Team (http://www.redcross.org/local/massachusetts/about-us/chapters/western-ma). A number of our dedicated group have deployed to national disasters, but my schedule does not (yet) allow me that flexibility. What I can do, however, is raise money for an organization that does good work.
I've also been upset that federal relief efforts to Puerto Rico following hurricane Maria have been pathetic, and the rhetoric has been counter-productive. So I'm asking my friends and family to help me celebrate my birthday by contributing to the Red Cross relief efforts following hurricane Maria, "the worst natural disaster on record in Dominica and Puerto Rico...the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide of 2017...the second Category 5 hurricane, and the deadliest storm of the hyperactive 2017 Atlantic hurricane season....Maria is also the third-costliest tropical cyclone on record with a total of roughly $100 billion in damages."
