ADDICTION AFFECTS 1 IN 2 FAMILIES AND DOES NOT DISCIRIMINATE. I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD AFFECT MINE. My oldest son has battled with substance use disorder ("addiction") for nearly 10 years and in those years there have been instances of tremendous adversity and difficulties. The past several years I have been determined to learn about addiction and recovery. I am now actively engaging in the community to help other families and individuals so that they never have to feel alone or without hope. This year, I am running in either a 5K, 10K, or 1/2 Marathon (Hopefully- the NYC Marathon at the end of the year) each month in order to raise awareness for substance use disorder, collaborate with people across the United States making progress in the fight against addiction, and run for my son when there have been many times he couldn't. There are gifts we recieve in life that we did not ask for, nor would we have chosen. But, some of those trials mold us into better people and teach us things about ourselves as well as others that we would not have otherwise known. It's about persevering and coming together to help others. All proceeds will go directly to Facing Addiction and one run will focus on donating to CLEAN CAUSE both of which are advocating for everyone affected by addiction and doing incredible things in commuities across the United States! I hope to be able to meet with other people in communities that I will run in to hear their stories, see their victories/programs that are working for them, and unite to beat addiction as well as stop the stigma attached to addiction and mental health. Feel free to reach out to me if you have a program that is working in your community and have a run or would like to participate in a run. I'm not organizing runs, but just joining in different runs each month. I'm not fast but I can finish!! I'd love to build connections to unite in the fight against this disease that is stealing so many lives and years from our loved ones.
