My running journey goes like this. I spent the first 30 years of my life hating running and never ran further than what my high school PE class required. Then at the age of 27 I became a mom to a son who went from crawling to running at 9 months of age. Joshua ran his first kids run the summer of 2007 and when I couldn’t keep up with him I got the crazy idea to try running.
Yes he was only 3, and yes I couldn’t keep up!
I tried the famous “couch to 5k” method, but gave up a short time later as I just didn’t have the motivation to stick with it. Then in November 2010, Joshua’s (age 6) younger brother Ryan (age 3 ) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes(T1D). T1D is a chronic, life threatening disease for which there is no cure.Shortly after the diagnosis I knew I needed an outlet to keep my mental and physical health stable, so I could be the mom both my boys needed me to be. Someone had suggested running, so there I was determined to give this running thing a try once again. The only difference is that this time it stuck!
At age 35 I ran my first 5k race.
At age 40 I ran my first marathon, but not just any marathon...the 2018 Boston marathon as a charity runner for another non-profit. It was nothing short of a life changing experience. Even in the most horrific weather conditions, with everything going wrong along the way(so many things!!) I finished. I finished, when many elite athletes didn’t even start!
...and the crazier part is I wanted to do it all over again. So, here I am ready to run. This time for an equally amazing charity, Rebekah's Angels.
Rebekah’s Angels was founded to provide mental health treatment to children and families suffering from trauma. Through an extensive application process, we will evaluate each individual need, and finance trauma focused therapy. Rebekah’s Angels believes the mental health of our children today, determines their success for the future.
I am super excited and honored to be running in support of Rebekah's Angels. I thank you in advance for your donation to this very important cause.
