What we are raising money for:
To support Indigenous families navigating the child welfare systems, the funds raised from the Virtual Spirit Walk will go towards the salary of the Family Care Worker position at the Shelter. The Shelter and the Shelter’s Family Care Workers provide critical support to Indigenous mothers and families by empowering Indigenous women to advocate for themselves, their children and their rights as mothers during youth protection meetings and court hearings. Crucially, the Shelter’s Family Care program provides healing and support in the face of the devastating, colonial practice of removing children from Indigenous families.
Indeed, Indigenous children are overrepresented at every stage of the youth protection system; the rates are higher than ever before, including during the period of residential schools.*** With the Family Care workers being proactive, passionate advocates for families followed by youth protection, fewer Indigenous children are placed in foster care.
The Shelter plays an essential role in supporting Indigenous women and children that are impacted by systemic discrimination within the child welfare system. The Virtual Spirit Walk is an opportunity to directly contribute to and support the important work the Shelter is doing in order to keep Indigenous families together.
