Ride for Reading's mission is to promote literacy and healthy-living by donating books via bicycle to children from low-income areas. Since our start in February 2008, Ride for Reading has donated more than 500,000 books, delivering them by bicycle to children at Title I schools. Ride for Reading believes that education is not only found within the four walls of a school building, but within the pages of a book you can go anywhere, see anything, and experience everything. Every child deserves that despite economic status.
Ride for Reading tackles one of the most fundamental issues facing the youth of this country: the inability for children to develop their reading skills. Illiteracy is a silent social problem that creates an annual $20 billion dollar tax burned in our society. Children who are unable to read become frustrated in school and with time begin to contemplate dropping out, and many do. Our organization creates a fundamental access to age-appropriate books where access is limited. Literature is knowledge, and the children of our impoverished communities stand a better chance to improve their quality of life in the long-term if they have an arms reach access to books that will expand their horizons.
Due to COVID-19, our largest fundraiser of the year has been cancelled, sponsorships are unavailable and our programming has halted. Each month, Ride for Reading spends approx. $5,600 to keep the lights on and the basic operations going. We would love your support to help us continue our mission over these next several months as we navigate this new normal. Our hope is to still find ways to get books to children during this uncertain time and to look at planning and rescheduling events for the Fall or 2021. Thank you for sticking with us & supporting our mission!
