Raquel is a beautiful 27 year old young woman. Four years ago she was coming down the stairs on her way to work, when her body froze. She couldn't move. Her symptoms worsened and included seizures, temporary blindness in her left eye, being unable to swallow, and pain in her head that was crushing. She said the pain felt like someone shot a bullet into her brain. The seizures robbed her of her memory.
Abruptly and dramatically, Raquels life changed. She became bed ridden. Hundreds of tests, MRIs, 22 specialists. Her life now comprised of going to doctors as more varied and terrifying symptoms arrived, and no definitive answers could be given. College was over. She could no longer work. Friends dropped away, no more dating. Raquel’s life became isolated and lonely.
Raquel was able to find a good therapist, who suggested a service dog could help her.
Bentley is this black lab’s name. He is the best medicine. Seizure? No problem. He prevents Raquel from falling and hitting her head by jumping up and pinning her to a sitting position while he kisses her face to bring her around. Stairs, no problem. Bentley walks slowly beside her and holds Raquel up. If she does fall or can't get up out of a sitting position, Bentley pulls her up. He retrieves fallen articles if she drops them, and best of all he loves Raquel. It was love at first sniff. This beautiful dog chose Raquel as his person. They just go together. Raquel has a new lease on life. She is hopeful.
And so are we, a band of people brought together out of love for a young girl. Making a difference in people's lives comes in lots of different ways. To be part of our band too, you can donate to Raquel’s cause to pay for Bentley. This is the treatment we found for Raquel. Love and hope. Your love matters too! It’s the only medicine that worked, and we are all part of it.
