Help Me Raise Funds to Bring Poets into Schools across Massachusetts
A year ago, I took the helm as Mass Poetry's executive director with the aim of bringing poetry to thousands of people, young and old, across Massachusetts. It's a role I savor, since it allows me to merge my passion for poetry with my love of building community around writing.
This school year, Mass Poetry aims to expand its Poet-in-Residence program, six-fold. This transformative program embeds a poet for an entire school year or a semester in a school short on funding and arts education.
Take New Mission High School, for example. New Mission High School has no arts teacher and few of its students receive state- mandated levels of arts instruction. For the second year in a row, Mass Poetry will place a poet-in-residence for the entire school year, and students will receive nearly three dozen sessions of direct instruction from poet Wendy Drexler. We'll also be hiring a spoken word coach to help form the school's first ever slam team to perform at the regional poetry competition Louder Than a Bomb.
Toward this end, it's my goal to raise $2,500, so that Mass Poetry can place more poets-in-residence in more schools across Massachusetts.
As thanks, I will share with you a hand-picked selection of poems from my manuscript-in-progress exploring the life and death of my close friend, American journalist James Foley, who was killed by ISIS in Syria in 2014.
About Raise Your Verse
Raise Your Verse is a six-week writing campaign that brings together poets, supporters, community members, and friends alike. Over six weeks, poets, writers, and community members will help Mass Poetry raise $20,000+ to benefit our innovative programming. Participants can write poems, haikus, free verse, sonnets, epistolary poems—any style, really, even prose—to share with their readers in exchange for donations to Mass Poetry. People can form teams or forge ahead alone. Most importantly, it should be fun!
