Five years ago, Ragged Wing Ensemble, a small but mighty theater company, took on the enormous task of creating and managing a shared performing arts venue in downtown Oakland.
It quickly became essential to the Bay Area’s cultural landscape, booked 50 weeks per year.
The Flight Deck is affordable, accessible, and essential to the Oakland arts ecosystem.
70 local arts groups present 220 performances at The Flight Deck every year, serving hundreds of artists and thousands of audience members.
The Flight Deck is the only shared black box theater in Oakland.
➔ Fact: It costs $300,000 annually to run The Flight Deck.
➔ Fact: Half of this is covered by the 70 groups who use space.
➔ Fact: Ragged Wing Ensemble fundraises to subsidize these groups a total of $150,000 per year without major institutional backing.
Ragged Wing Ensemble carries this load.
But we can no longer carry it alone.
The real estate market in Oakland is brutal. The cost of living is rising. Cultural institutions are closing and artists are leaving the region in droves. But we intend to stay and thrive.
We are convening a group of artists to build a cooperative business to preserve and cultivate cultural space. We are banding together to claim our value and build the creative economy.
In the absence of major governmental support for the arts in this country, individuals like you must step up to make sure the arts not only survive in this economy, but thrive. If you want this organization to continue to exist, serving the community with cutting edge originalperformances and affordable, accessible arts space, and creating a more equitable and sustainable model for the arts, it’s time to put your dollars where your values are.
Help this ecosystem thrive.
