Hi! My name is Rachel and I am a rising junior in high school. Since I was a baby, migraines have been a regular part of my life. Before I got a migraine, I would see flashing lights everywhere, impeding my sense of sight. After about thirty minutes, my head would feel as if a hammer was repeatedly hitting me and all the medicine I tried would be thrown back up. I could not eat, drink water, or do anything except lie down in a dark room and wait until my migraine went away, which usually took until the rest of the day. I had these at least once a month and at its worst, three times in one week. It significantly impacted my quality of life and I felt like I was missing out because my friends would always be having fun while I was at home fighting my way through yet another migraine. I went to doctors, neurologists, and even got an MRI scan but to this day there are no known definite causes or cures. It was more difficult to participate in my daily activities because I was always anxious and paranoid of getting another migraine. I went to the ER for anxiety attacks and lost tons of weight from puking so much. I am not the only one that suffers with these migraines. 38 million Americans and 1 in 4 families are affected by migraines. It is the 6th most disabling and 3rd most prevalent illness in the world. To raise money for research and finding cures, I will be running a 5K in January with a goal of raising $500 by then. All proceeds go directly to research. Thank you for the support!
