April 6, 2016, my dad, Bill Collins, died from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. He had been diagnosed for 7 years. Parkinson's disease is progressive, degenerative, and has no cure. Those affected by it, lose control of their muscles, among other symptoms. It is massive amounts of no fun. In 2017, major pharmaceutical companies announced they would no longer fund research for medications to treat Parkinson's. Changes in health care has made federal funding for Parkinson's research uncertain. Atlanta based Racetrac has partnered with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to speed a cure for Parkinson's disease. On, April 28th, 2018, Racetrac will host the Race for Research 5K in Atlanta to benefit the Fox Foundation. I will be running this race because, now more than ever, Parkinson's research needs funding. I run, because my dad cannot. I humbly ask for your support as we Race for Research.
