In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
Ukraine is currently in quarantine due to COVID-19. To help some of the most vulnerable, we are purchasing and delivering essential supplies to families of children with special needs in Ukraine.
Oksana's daughter was only 2 years old when her mother suddenly became unwell. It started with cold symptoms and then a high temperature. She woke up in the morning and was unable to go to the toilet. She was taken to the local hospital where she began to deteriorate further, to the point of not being able to move or feel her lower body. After being transferred to a larger hospital, she was diagnosed with encephalomyelitis. Two years later, she is still unable to walk and uses a wheelchair.
