Did you know that Guatemala has the highest number of registered cases of COVID-19 in all of Central America? At Together We Can Guatemala, our mission is to support education and environmentally sustainable economic opportunities for disadvantaged Guatemalan youth. A cornerstone of our work is to support the permaculture-based programs of the Garden of Hope (GoH). However, the Global COVID-19 Pandemic has required us to rethink our approach to better address the needs of our communities while maintaining a safe, social distance. On July 27th, 2020, the government of Guatemala, led by President Alejandro Giammattei, lifted the majority of national regulations put in place to limit the spread and contraction of the global pandemic, COVID-19. Though the country aims to follow a tiered-system of health alerts, new cases of the virus continue to increase in overwhelming numbers as Guatemalans leave home-quarantine. Now, more than ever, we need your help.
A recent study from the Camara Guatemalteca de Alimentos y Bebidas reports that only 58.75% of employees in neighborhood “tiendas,” or small local stores, wear face masks to protect against the spread and contraction of COVID-19. In addition, produce markets have been deemed major points of COVID-19 contraction. Guatemalan community members are facing extreme risk to ensure their families receive proper nutrition as we continue to endure these difficult times, but you can make a difference.
Your monetary donation will reduce the need for families to leave home-quarantine and expose themselves and others to the virus while also providing a sustainable way to ensure families do not fall into malnutrition. And don’t forget! You can deduct up to $300 without itemization from your taxable income for the current 2020 tax year through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
For a donation of just 15 dollars, you can provide a Quarantine Container Garden to a student in need, helping them and their family access critical nutrients without leaving their home. Kits include a burlap sack for growing, organic soil, a selection of quick growing, nutritious seeds, and an educational how-to booklet.
If you’re able, please make a gift of any amount to Together We Can Guatemala today. You can provide a little piece of the Garden of Hope to our families in need. THANK YOU for your commitment to helping Guatemalan communities, and THANK YOU for your gift. Together We Can overcome COVID-19!
