About Northern Voices and the Kannonball:
Northern Voices is the reason why Tyler Christopherson started the Kannonball Rally five years ago.
Tyler's daughter, Harper, is a graduate of this school, which teaches deaf children how to speak and listen using their cochlear implants and hearing aids. Children start at the school as early as 9 months old. The goal of this school is to prepare these children to start kindergarten with their hearing peers at their neighborhood school. Since deaf children can't hear themselves speak, their speech development is severely delayed or non-existent. After a child undergoes a cochlear implantation (or is fitted with hearing aids), they can begin their journey at Northern Voices. The school uses no sign language, as it can be a crutch for children to communicate without their voices. These kids work so hard to interpret the sounds coming from their devices. Its truly amazing to hear their speech develop.
Harper started NV when she was 2. She could maybe say 2-3 words. The teachers kept telling us that when she's done at NV, she won't be able to stop talking. It was our dream for that happen. We're happy to report, that Harper is quite the chatterbox. When you see her on rally day, please stop by and say hello :)
Northern Voices (Roseville, MN) is a private school that receives zero funding from the state. They rely on grants, tuition, and donations to operate. Like we said earlier, the school had been running in the red (at a loss) for years. Thanks to all of you, we helped them finish the fiscal year on a happy note, allowing them to purchase some much needed supplies and resources to help the program grow!
