I'm committed to doing 1000 pushups and raising $1,000 to bring awareness and support for Fair Trade initiatives. (Join or support with every $1 = 1 pushup!)
Push-ups are hard. When I tried to do a push-up, it made me feel so weak and realize that it was a lot easier to sit on the couch, comfortably. Advocating for a social justice issues like Fair Trade and anti-human trafficking is much like this. It’s hard, can be exhausting, and would be a lot easier to just live comfortably on the “couch” of convenience, consumerism and apathy without a care for the rest of the world, or the people in it.
But guess what the secret of doing hard things is. They make us STRONG for ourselves and STRONGER for others around us. COVID-19 and the disparity of 2020 has made many of us feel physically and emotionally weak, and we’re the ones living in a first-world country! Vulnerable people already living in poverty around the world have been struck much harder by the harsh socio-economic fallout of this pandemic. For those of us who can, its time that we rise up to be STRONG for them.
I am strongly convinced that my investment and volunteer commitment is best put to work in long-term prevention work, something I learned from the human trafficking experts very early on when studying this global phenomenon. While there is always a need for crisis relief, we can only move away from fixing the symptoms of the problem when we start addressing the roots of the issue. The Fair Trade movement actively tackles so many societal issues at the root causes by advocating and demanding a more just world in which all human beings are treated ethically, and paid fairly without exploitation or abuse of power or planet. These are values and ethics I am committed to in every aspect of my life and that is why I am an advocate for Fair Trade. I invite you to partner with me on this journey.
