Welcome to Pushing for Change, a collaboration between the Queen's University Men's Hockey Team, and Step Above Stigma!
Racism is an injustice that has impacted hockey for far too long. Racist taunts, financial barriers and discrimination on and off the ice are things that no aspiring hockey player should have to face. Unfortunately, hockey is still nowhere near as diverse as it should be, robbing minority hockey players of an environment where they can truly belong. Positive change will only be achieved if we work as one to build a community where all hockey players are celebrated and given an equal chance to play the beautiful game.
To help combat racism in hockey and work towards a more equitable environment, the Queen’s University Men’s Hockey Team has partnered with Step Above Stigma to raise funds for the Hockey Diversity Alliance, a non-profit organization that seeks to eradicate racism and discrimination from hockey and create a culture where individuals-regardless of their race, colour, and gender can safely participate.
What is more, the intersectionality of racism and mental health creates additional barriers that discourage minority players from participating in the game. Mental health is not only an important part of the game, but an important aspect of every part of life. Therefore, we hope these funds will make a positive impact on the mental health of the underprivileged and racialized communities the Hockey Diversity Alliance serves.
To amplify the crucial cause of increasing diversity in hockey, the Queen’s Men’s Hockey Team will complete ONE PUSH-UP for EVERY DOLLAR raised! 100% of all funds will be donated to the HDA. We truly believe that there is no place for racism and discrimination in hockey and that all players at every level deserve the equal opportunity to play. Let’s PUSH for change together.
Thank you for your support!
