Did you know there are over 100,000 people waiting on a kidney donation to save their life in the US? We could close that list to zero if more poeple volunteered to become living kidney donors!
Hi, I'm David Ashley, also know as Adventure Kidney, and I'm a living kidney donor. I donated to a college classmate at the age of 42 back in January of 2017. Going through the donation process and hearing how it saved the life of my good friend Chris chanaged me forever. I am now a retired military officer and dedicating my time to raising awareness of how living organ donation literally saves lives.
As an amature adventure athlete and active duty military officer back in 2016/2017, I lacked informtion about how my life would potentially change after making a donation. Could I still run a marathon, bike a 100 miles, or climb a mountain? Would the military give me restrictions on duty and impact my career? I asked my friends, co-workers, and race teammates, but knowbody could provide me with facts or a mentor to advise me in this decision. So, I accepted those risks and donated.
Over three years later, I've now learned that few limitations to athletics and military service exist for living donors. I'm just as active as before donatating, and following voluntary military retimrent in summer 2019 I've become a full-time adventure athlete! I'm truly living beyond donation.
My vision is to inspire other athletes and military members to consider becoming living donors. How will I do this? Through completing an epic adventure: Climbing the tallest mountains on each of the seven continents. These so-called "Seven Summits" are a true test of endurance, strength, and full body fitness that only a few people in the world have completed. When successful I'll be the first living kidney donor to join that elite group.
I’ve teamed up with the non-profits American 300 and Purple Heart Summits. They link up experienced mountaineers with service members wounded in action, sharing the skills needed to climb the world’s tallest mountains. There are several climbs in the next 18 months in their program, including Everest in 2021. So I’ll be doing several climbs with some of our wounded warriors as a climbing mentor to those heros.
You can follow my progress online at www.adventurekindey.com or on my Facebook and Instagram handle "AdventureKidney".
I need your help! Please tell others about my journey, and share this page, my website, and my social media sites with your friends and family.
In addition, please consider making a donation either here or via my website (options for PayPal and a no-fee snail mail check). All options go diretly to the non-profit American 300 and their Purple Heart Summits program. American 300 is supporting me with access to experienced mountain guides and pairing me with a combat wounded purple heart receipent on most climbs..
For success, I attpemting to raise $150,000 to cover the cost of equipment, travel, permits, base camp logistics, and guide services over the next 18 months. I have over $10,000 raised so far, thanks to all who have donated!
You may be able to claim tax credit on your donation. Talk to your accountant or tax advisor to discuss your particular situation.
