Amelia and I are getting married in June 2020. As everyone knows, part of planning a wedding involves selecting people for the wedding parties. When thinking about my best man, I instantly thought of my brother. In October 2011, I was best man at his wedding. It was a great honor for me because my bro was one of my very best friends. Unfortunately, my beloved brother, Ryan Michael Kennedy, can’t be my best man because he tragically passed away in 2014.
Ryan had a hard-fought 12-year battle with pulmonary hypertension. He lived a beautiful life, and while he certainly wasn’t perfect, he left behind the legacy of being a loving, generous, and intellectually brilliant man.
When thinking about wedding gifts, Ami and I thought about how much we’ve already been given in life. We have everything that two people could ever want or need. We hope that instead of buying us presents, you’ll donate to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA). A contribution will help people currently in a position similar to the one my brother was in.
Maybe Ryan can’t be my best man, but I feel his spirit with me when I do work that honors his legacy. Setting up a donation campaign in lieu of a traditional wedding registry makes me feel closer to him.
