Working for a transitional housing program at Walden Family Services in San Diego, I've seen firsthand the compilation of injustices that impact local youth, making it impossible for them to get on their own two feet. Without the support of a loving family, a stable childhood, or positive role models, this population is set at a distinct disadvantage at a young and vulnerable age, where sometimes a good work ethic and determination simply aren't enough to get ahead. Add on top of that the stigma against those who identify as LGBTQ, and the barriers to success intensify.
LGBTQ youth make up 7% of the youth population, yet make up 40% of the homeless population. Studies suggest that LGBTQ youth are 120% more likely to end up homeless than their straight peers.
This is why I am joining fellow lifters on June 16th at the Pull for Pride event in San Diego. Not only is this deadlifting competition a day for celebrating the beauty of strength and determination used to overcome heavy obstacles, but more importantly it is benefiting a fellow housing program in our city - the Sunburst Youth Housing Project. This housing program provides shelter and services to LGBTQ and HIV+ youth who face homelessness after being ejected from their own homes simply because of who they are.
It is my goal to raise as many dollars as pounds I plan to lift in my combined 3 attempts (I'll let you do the math), where every dollar goes to keeping this program open and providing services to members of my community. Please consider donating toward my lifts for this extremely necessary housing program.
