Healthy Rural California's Board of Directors created a new award in the name of Butte County California's most recent Public Health Officer, Andy Miller, MD. We are raising money to provide the Andy Miller, MD Public Health Excellence Award in future years and to expand the award to other areas of rural California. As the COVID-19 pandemic showed, we need more public health leaders and voices in our state, not less. We hope this award will raise awareness that public health measures are non-partisan and effective in protecting the health of everyone in our communities. We're naming this award for Dr. Miller because during the past few years, he guided Butte County residents through 3 major disasters - the Oroville Dam failure, the Camp Fire and the pandemic - in addition to many other issues such as measles outbreaks and harm reduction efforts. Healthy Rural California hopes this award and fund will inspire more public health leadership and promote the good work of public health throughout California.
