Heidi Runs a Marathon... You read that right... the ultimate sloth / couch potato will be running the Chicago Marathon October 2020 to raise money for Project Purple, an an impact-driven organization with a vision of a world without pancreatic cancer.
Why? In October 2018, my dad, David Jones, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He has faced his diagnosis like the inspirational champ that he is, but this is an ugly disease. Since 11/2018, he has endured over 5 rounds of chemo, a whipple procedure, and countless scans, blood draws, etc... In September of 2019, he learned that the tumors had spread to his liver. He has and continues to remain optimistic throughout all of this and continues to care about the impact of this disease on those around him, and not himself.
Becky and I will be fundraising, training, and running together next year in his adopted hometown of Chicago, where he moved 10 years ago. He has grown to love his new community - and the community has grown to love him, as well. While there he has served as an interim priest in various Episcopal parishes, as an advocate for homeless people, and most recently, as the chaplain for the Evanston Fire Department.
While we can't fix his prognosis, and we can't be with him in person through his entire journey, we can work to raise funds so that someday others don't have to endure the same. And we can come together in Chicago to put our own bodies through a challenge that neither one of us is currently prepared to do. Follow us both (Becky's fundraising page will be posted shortly) and offer us hope, inspiration, and MONEY to honor our dad and fight this awful disease!
