Friends and Family!
As many of you know, my father passed away in 2010 after a short, but hard fought, battle with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. Next year will be the 10 year anniversary of his death and what would have been his 60th birthday! In memory of my dad, Jim Marks, I will be running the 2020 Chicago Marathon with Project Purple, an organization raising money for Pancreatic Cancer research.
Pancreatic Cancer is projected to become the #2 killer of all major cancers in the USA by 2020. Why is it so deadly? There is NO EARLY DETECTION and NO KNOWN CURE for Pancreatic Cancer. The cause of pancreatic cancer isn't fully understood and the symptoms are ambiguous and hard to pinpoint. The high mortality rate for this cancer is caused by doctors being unable to diagnose it until later stages. By then it is often too late to cure.
While Pancreatic Cancer has the lowest 5-year survival rate of all major cancers, it only receives 5% of the funds allocated by the government for cancer research. If you feel inclined to donate, I would appreciate your help in fighting this disease.
Thanks for your support!
Project Purple is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization created with the goal of raising awareness and funds to defeat pancreatic cancer. Our tagline, “A World Without Pancreatic Cancer” comes from our belief in our mission. From 5Ks to 100 milers, our teams participate in some of the top U.S. races, including The TCS NYC Marathon, Chicago, Grandma’s, and Lincoln. Our runners come from all over the world, and all have been touched by pancreatic cancer. With their help, we have been providing research funding and patient financial aid since 2010.
