Good health builds strong communities; strong communities sustain good health. Over our six-year history, Project Healthy Community (PHC) has worked to create and sustain this positive circle in our Detroit community.
With the help of our volunteers and partners, PHC provides educational, nutritional, and wellness services and resources to over 1,000 Detroiters a year. 2019 is a watershed year for PHC, as we develop and build our long-anticipated Family Wellness Center while sustaining and expanding our existing programs.
By supporting PHC, you will be building a healthier, stronger Detroit.
OUR CORE PROGRAMS
FUN Pantry (Fundamentals of Understanding Nutrition)
Our six-week nutritional education program blends fun, interactive classroom lessons with home activities, encouraging participants to connect with family members in the kitchen and across the dinner table. FUN Pantry has impacted over 750 children and families since the program’s creation, and is now delivered in four Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) elementary schools.
The Lester Family Summer Camp
PHC’s six-week summer camp supports physical and emotional development for 50 K-5th grade students through a combination of free play and enrichment activities. Activities include gardening, cooking, swimming, dance, team sports, music, and field trips—all designed to spark curiosity, encourage imagination, and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Emerging Scholars Program
This college and career readiness program combines mentorship, volunteerism, and workplace learning. High school students commit to a volunteer placement coupled with a paid workplace internship in a field of their choosing. Each student is connected with a mentor, who tracks and supports their growth and development. 51 DPSCD students have benefited from the Emerging Scholars Program; 90% of these Emerging Scholars have gone on to attend college.
Mobile Food Pantry
Limited access to healthy food (due to food deserts, tight budgets, or both) is a significant barrier to good nutrition and physical health. PHC’s Mobile Food Pantry supplements the food budgets of 350 families with approximately $100 worth of nutritious groceries a month, including fresh produce grown in PHC’s own community garden. Mobile Food Pantry participants also have the opportunity, upon food pick-up, to attend PHC’s Speaker Series, offering lectures on topics relating to health and nutrition.
Family Wellness Center
PHC’s Family Wellness Center offers holistic health and wellness education to adults. Our wellness center addresses a gap in existing health programming, which does not provide sufficient resources for parents and other caregivers, although their health impacts the health of the entire family. By providing health support to adults, PHC is able to take steps in disease prevention for the whole family.
