Florida has ranked higher for deaths by suicide than the national average for the past 5+ years.
Suicide became the second leading cause death for 10 to 24-year-olds.
The highest suicide rate was among males aged 65 and older, followed by males aged 45 to 54.
Suicide rates among veterans are 1.5 times greater than non-veterans.
We can prevent suicide. One way to do this is to donate to local community preventive initiatives such as Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP).
FISP provides numerous preventive programs and support. They provide our teens with a safe place to discuss their problems while learning how to deal with all the stresses of today in school and at home with the HOPE Sunshine Club. This 32 week school board approved curriculum includes tools to build leadership skills, problem solving, coping skills and much more. Today FISP has HOPE Sunshine Clubs in 44 Florida schools in 2 counties.
In addition to the HOPE Sunshine Clubs, FISP offers support groups, an annual 5k event, they advocate for funding from our legislators, and they offer an annual conference for survivors of suicide loss.
