The Wonderground Park is the community gathering space at the heart of the Greenmount West neighborhood--a diverse and vibrant community in Central Baltimore that is one of 3 neighborhoods that make up the Station North Arts and Entertainment District.
The Wonderground is comprised of a series of lots that once held homes and a commercial building. Over the past 20 years, the community adopted and maintained the park to be enjoyed by neighbors as a safe recreational place in which to relax, visit, garden, & watch their children play in the large open space or help them read books from the 3 Story Library.
Current initiatives in collaboration with Baltimore City and nonprofit community partners are underway to realize the full potential of the Wonderground. Plans include functional and artistic lighting, wellness programming, and curated community events. Long-term plans include the permanent preservation of the space in partnership with the City and the Baltimore Green Space land trust. With the majority of the lots owned by Baltimore City, 3 lots remained in private hands.
On Tuesday, March 16, 1pm EST, the Greenmount West Community learned that a parcel in the center of the Wonderground had been placed on the market! The GW Community Association President immediately contacted the realtor and communicated the community’s concern.
The results of this heart-in-hand effort include: The seller has agreed to offer the Greenmount West Community Association the first rights to purchase and the realtor has assured us that no “for sale” sign will be posted on the property. We are grateful for both of these good-will gestures. However, we are agreed that we must proactively raise the funds to ensure that the Wonderground is preserved for generations to come.
We ask our community friends, partners, and supporters to help us purchase the lot; and ensure that the Wonderground will not be gutted---physically and spiritually.
The Greenmount West Community Association thanks you, in advance, for your support and contribution.
