Hi, I am Prem Kumar and yes I plan to run across Haiti … crazy maybe but inspired by the worthy cause and mission. So a little bit about myself and the mission at hand: I started my running journey in late 2012 as a way to sustain weight loss and ran my first race in April of 2013 in Edmonton, Canada that gave me a good dosage of “runners high”. Later that year we moved back to Rochester, NY, initially worried that I was going to struggle with my new found love of running but I was so wrong as I met such a great running community that not only cares about each other but our environment, our trails, our parks, our first responders. This is the community that supports my passion, ensures my running remains my way of life.
So far running has given me a lot and I want to use it to give back to a mission that I feel connected to in some remote way. I was born and raised in south western part of Pakistan. Poverty, low literacy rate, standard of living, lack of drinking water, civil unrest due to constant tribal clashes, corruption etc. were and are normal that most of us don’t do much about. Without going into much detail my situation has limited me of doing something about it thus far but I am hopeful for a better future.
This endeavor of running across Haiti is tied to a poverty ending mission by Work (formerly Team Tassy) that are preparing and placing families in Haiti into good dignified jobs. Their goal is to show that Haiti is not a place to fear or to pitty instead help locals get out of poverty via jobs and education. They have been at work in a community outside of Port-au-Prince called Menelas and are already making a difference in quite a few families lives.
I feel honored to be one of forty runners that are selected to participate in 5th annual Run Across Haiti (RAH) 2019 fund raising event. We will be running around 220 miles from north coast near Cap-Haitien to south coast near Jacmel over a period of 8 days in mid-February.
We can do this together and make a difference in this beautiful world. I need your help in meeting my fund raising goal. Every little counts and please don’t forget to get your company to match your donations.
Thank You from me, the Work organization and Menelas Families.
